OK, I’ve got 3 new motards in the garage, but I’ve got to admit I’m totally excited about this thing. One of my first bikes was a 1971 k1 cb750. Completely rebuilt and stock, and like an idiot I sold it. At the time I wanted a bike with brakes that actually worked, or something equally crazy. So last week I went to pick up a drz400sm for the biz, saw the famous 4/4 pipes sticking out from under a blanket and said “I’ll take it, how much?”. Dave gave me the screaming deal of $1000. 16k original miles, and I’ll be the second registered owner, once I get through the whole dmv headache. Rebuilt the petcock today, only thing left is to put new foam in the seat, sync the carbs, and throw fluids in her.

There’s a guy on ebay that does paint resto’s of old cb’s, so I’ll eventually do the 71 honda gold k1 treatment:

Here’s what club riding supermoto looked like 8 years ago in San Diego. I’m on the black xr400, eddie on the yellow yz425, and a bunch of other “junkies”. Mish mash gear, chopped front fenders, crappy track we were lucky to have and converted bikes:
Keeping with the ducati theme….

Can you tell I secretly want to be a flat tracker? Here’s a really cool vintage duc dirt tracker that belongs to one of the members at supermoto junkie.

It’s amazing the photos you can come accross going through your email account. I bought this site unseen from a guy in SF, a 98 wr400sm. That’s when sm’s were kinda hard to come by, otherwise I would have never gone for it. Looking back at this pic it’s not a big surprise that it’s piston cracked going 70 down the freeway. Bad news was that I had sold a very fun and very reliable xr400sm in order to get more “performance”. What an idiot. Still I had plenty of commute days, track days, and even a race on this bike. Took me a while just to de-stickerfy it…
Thanks to Malcolm for the tour, and robin for the lesson. It’s only tuesday and I’m already sore…
